Forest Grove Community Information

Forest Grove offers small town living at the edge of the Portland metropolitan area. It is situated in Washington County, the heart of the “Silicon Forest” of Oregon. Forest Grove is an easy drive through farmland from Highway 26 and the Sunset High Tech Corridor. It is also only 45 minutes drive from two of the great spots on the Oregon Coast, Cannon Beach and Tillamook.

Forest Grove is a diverse employment center, reflecting the opportunities found throughout Washington County. The county drives the regional economy, significantly outpacing the region in employment growth over the last several years. Even while it was growing as a manufacturing and services powerhouse, Washington County has continued to grow as an agriculture leader in Oregon.

The Forest Grove School District offers great schools to local children. In addition to being the only school district in Oregon to earn “exceptional” ratings on recent state education report cards, it is the only rural school district in the country with the “I Have A Dream” program. Its average of one computer for every five students is one of the highest in the state and the district displays its commitment to music education with its elementary school strings program.

In the heart of the City, Pacific University is a nationally recognized liberal arts college with graduate programs in the health sciences. Chartered in 1849 as the Tualatin Academy, Pacific University serves a combined population of approximately 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The campus hosts audiences for popular theatrical and musical performances and generously serves as a central park for community events.

Nearby, Fernhill Wetlands features 600 acres of wetland wildlife habitat. The preserve is home to herons, hawks, eagles, beaver, otter, mink, waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds. Peregrine Falcons and a pair of Bald Eagles are returning visitors. The Fernhill Wetlands Research and Education Field Station, currently under development, will be open to the public. Viewing stations, walking paths, and informational kiosks provide opportunities to discover nature at its best in Forest Grove.

Nature lovers will also enjoy Henry Hagg Lake, which is just ten miles outside of Forest Grove. This 1,113-acre lake offers boating, water skiing, fishing, and two boat launching areas. Lake activities are divided to ensure maximum enjoyment. Sailing, rafting, canoeing or trolling occur on the west end of Hagg Lake, the no-wake side. Water skiing and motor boating are directed to the east end where 35 miles per hour is the rule. The surrounding Scoggins Valley Park provides numerous covered and uncovered picnic facilities, 15-plus miles of hiking trails, observation decks for wildlife and bird-watching and extensive facilities for disabled visitors. For biking enthusiasts, a 10.5 mile, well-marked bicycle lane parallels the Park's perimeter road.

Don’t forget that you will be living right near the heart of Oregon’s wine country. There are over ten celebrated wineries in Washington County and you can come on out for a tour, to bike through the area, plan a picnic or visit the tasting rooms. Back in Forest Grove, you can take a walking tour of historic old town and experience 150 years of the town’s architectural history. Architectural styles include Classical Revival, Second Empire, Italianate, Victorian, Colonial and Georgian Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman.

There is a real sense of community in Forest Grove as can be glimpsed by the number of times each year the community likes to celebrate and play together. For one, there is the Concours d’Elegance, one of four premier vintage car shows in the United States. For nearly 30 years this annual summer event has hosted thousands of visitors and hundreds of classic automobiles on the manicured grounds of Pacific University. Every September, four tons of locally grown fresh corn is consumed at the historic-theme Founders’ Day Corn Roast barbeque, which also features booths and a full day of entertainment.
